National Forest Land Investments

Want to make money while helping to consolidate state and national lands? There can be politics involved, but there can also be big profits.

Where I lived in Northern Michigan, real estate deals between developers and the state or national forests were not uncommon. Direct sales are uncommon, because neither the National Forest Service nor the State Departments of Natural Resources have much in their budgets for buying more land. What they can do, however, is trade land.

Why do they do this? To consolidate wild lands. If you have ever looked at a plat map for an area that has national or state forests, you may have noticed that the forests consist of a patchwork of properties. There is private land mixed with public. There may even be little pieces of state or national forest land that are miles away from the rest of the forest.

Forest Land Investment - An Example

Suppose you have land in the middle of a large area of state forest. The state would like to have it, in order to make the state forest more complete. They don't have the money to pay you, but they do have isolated pieces of land closer to a nearby town, and they may be willing to trade one of these for your land. You negotiate an exchange.

The state gets what it wants, and you get what you want. What you want, as an investor, is land that has more value. You may have paid $60,000 for the property in the state forest, and traded it for a piece that can be sold for $100,000.

This process is common when ski resorts are built in the west. It is nearly impossible to buy national forest land, or to sell land to the Forest Service. However, trading pieces of land is how both the resorts and the Forest Service sometimes consolidate land for their purposes.

This can be a difficult way to make money starting from scratch. You don't want to just start buying land hoping that you can trade it for more valuable land. If you have land that adjoins public land, however, this is a strategy to keep in mind.

Another possibility is to find private land in a National or State Forest, and then tie it up with an option. Then you can negotiate with the Forest Service to see if they might make a trade. Before you do even this, however, talk to a couple insiders to see if they are doing any trading in your area.

Turkish novelist and scholar Orhan Pamuk appears at the 2010 National Book Festival. Speaker Biography: Orhan Pamuk was born in Istanbul and grew up in a large family similar to those that he describes in his novels "Cevdet Bey and His Sons" and "The Black Book," in the city's wealthy westernized district. As he writes in his autobiographical "Istanbul," from his childhood until the age of 22 he devoted himself largely to painting and dreamed of becoming an artist. After graduating from the secular American Robert College in Istanbul, he studied architecture at Istanbul Technical University for three years, but abandoned the course when he gave up his ambition to become an architect and artist. He went on to graduate in journalism from Istanbul University, but never worked as a journalist. At the age of 23, Pamuk decided to become a novelist and, giving up everything else, retreated into his flat and began to write. Pamuk's books have been translated into 58 languages; and eight of them have been translated from Turkish into English His new book is "The Museum of Innocence" (Knopf). In 2006 Pamuk was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

I was surprised by the smooth waters for our journey as the last time I was on a ferry in Mexico from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel we were rocking and rolling it was very very unpleasant! When we arrived in Turkey we met our guide and driver and then we took off for the 2 hour drive to Ephesus. I was very surprised to learn that the west coast area in which we were traveling looked so very similar to what I would see in California. It was discovered that the climate here is very similar to CA and this is why this specific area was well enjoyed by not only tourists but Turkish nationals as vacation areas. I just referred it as the the Hampton's of Turkey! While on our journey we came across some police check points who were interested in who was driving in the area...well we found out why really fast! Apparently the Turkish army was out doing "war games" with several rocket and missile launchers perched upon the grassy fields it was quite impressive. Although we couldn't confirm it I think they got a lil boom boom action because it would be pointless to bring all these folks out here (including high level political officials) and not give them a show of force... After about 2 nice ...

From there, these brokers will then help you look for properties suitable for your needs and budget. They usually obtain listings of homes for sale and then compare them with similar properties that were recently sold in order to figure out the most competitive market value. Financing options may also be offered to you in case you don't have sufficient funds to purchase the property.

Once you are provided with several choices, you may request to personally visit the properties to check their condition and location. A gauge on what makes a good real estate broker or agent is their ability to identify and provide buyers with the most important selling details. These should include the crime rate in the area, accessibility to schools, shops and banks as well as the floor plan of the house.

Keep in mind that you need to be honest about your needs to a real estate broker so they can, in turn, finds the best ways to meet your needs.

A Real Estate broker and a Real Estate agent are two terms that you will hear from time to time. But what exactly is the difference between the two? The broker also follows these regulations but he also follows much more stringent regulations under the NAR.

Which one to choose?

When it comes to finding a property or selling your property, both of them can help you. On many occasions the realtor will hire the agent himself. When this happens, the agent's behavior and his performance is the responsibility of the realtor and you no longer have to worry. The agent will follow the high code of ethics that are set by the more experienced realtor. It is also important to mention that each one has its own pros and cons.

Choosing one:-

You can look at certain points before choosing a Real Estate agent or a broker. You need to look at whether the broker is licensed or not. All brokers and agents need to be licensed in the US but the rules may vary for other countries. There are separate registrations and license needed by certain states. Look for listing options, services and selling ideas that they may have. When you have this with you, you can always do a comparison between couple of brokers. Ask for the pricing and the fee structure. Ask them to cover all kinds of charges and fees that may be involved in the transaction. At any point of time during the transaction, if you do not feel comfortable about anything make sure that you negotiate it with the chosen party. The commission, the term of the contract etc are some of the things that can be discussed and negotiated openly.

Lord Byron's opening couplet to "She Walks In Beauty" is among the most memorable and most quoted lines in romantic poetry. The opening lines are effortless, graceful, and beautiful, a fitting match for his poem about a woman who possesses effortless grace and beauty.

Life in England

Lord Byron was born George Gordon Noel Byron in London in 1788. He became a Lord in 1798 when he inherited the title and the estate of his great-uncle. Byron's mother had taken him to Scotland for treatment for his club foot, but she brought him back to England to claim the title and the estate.

Byron was privately tutored in Nottingham for a short period. He then studied in Harrow, Southwell, and Newstead, and finally at Trinity College. Byron discovered a talent for writing poetry and published some early poems in 1806 and his first collection, called Hours of Idleness, in 1807 at the age of 19. When he turned age 21 he was able to take his seat in the House of Lords.

However, Lord Byron left England for two years with his friend, John Hobhouse, to travel through Europe. They toured Spain, Malta, Greece, and Constantinople. Greece especially impressed Byron and would create a recurring theme in his life.

After returning to England Lord Byron made his first speech to the House of Lords. Later that year he published a "poetic travelogue" titled, Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, a respectable collection of verses about his recent travels in Europe. The collection earned Lord Byron lasting fame and admiration. Lord Byron had become a ladies' man and the newly earned celebrity brought him a series of affairs and courtships.

Lord Byron married Anna Isabella Milbanke in 1815 and his daughter, Augusta, was born later that year. However, the marriage did not last long. In early 1816 Anna and Augusta left Lord Byron and later that year he filed for legal separation and left England for Switzerland, a self-imposed exile.

Life in Europe

While in Switzerland Lord Byron stayed with Percy Bysshe Shelley, a prominent metaphysical and romantic poet, and had an illegitimate daughter, Allegra, with Claire Clairmont. After that affair ended, Lord Byron and his friend, John Hobhouse traveled through Italy, settling first in Venice, where he had a couple more affairs, including an affair with the nineteen year old Countess Teresa Guicciolo. Here Lord Byron began his most famous and most acclaimed work, the epic poem Don Juan.

Lord Byron and Teresa moved to Ravenna, then to Pisa, and then to Leghorn, near Shelley's house, in 1821. The poet Leigh Hunt moved in with Lord Byron later that year after Shelley drowned off the coast near Leghorn in a storm. Lord Byron contributed poetry to Hunt's periodical, The Liberal, until 1823 when he took the opportunity to travel to Greece to act as an agent for the Greeks in their war against Turkey.

Lord Byron used his personal finances to help fund some of the battles by the Greeks against the Turks. He even commanded a force of three thousand men in an attack on the Turkish-held fortress of Lepanto. The siege was unsuccessful and the forces withdrew. At this time Lord Byron suffered one or two epileptic fits. The remedy of the day, blood-letting, weakened him.

Six weeks later, during a particularly chilly rainstorm, Lord Byron contracted a severe cold. The accompanying fever was treated by repeated bleeding by trusted physicians, but his condition worsened until he eventually slipped into a coma and died on April 19, 1824.

Lord Byron was a hero in Greece and was deeply mourned there. His heart was buried in Greece and his body was sent to England where it was buried in the family vault near Newstead. He was denied burial in Westminster Abbey because of the perceived immorality of his life and numerous controversies. Finally in 1969, 145 years after his death, a memorial was placed in the Poets' Corner of Westminster Abbey, commemorating his poetry and accomplishments.

Shortly after his arrival in Greece, Lord Byron had written these appropriate lines.

"Seek out--less often sought than found--

A soldier's grave--for thee the best

Then look around, and choose thy ground,

And take thy rest."

An interesting and exceptional biography of Lord Byron's life was written in 1830 by a contemporary and friend, John Galt, titled, The Life of Lord Byron. The 49 chapters give a good measure of Lord Byron's complexity.

"She Walks in Beauty"

In June, 1814, several months before he met and married his first wife, Anna Milbanke, Lord Byron attended a party at Lady Sitwell's. While at the party, Lord Byron was inspired by the sight of his cousin, the beautiful Mrs. Wilmot, who was wearing a black spangled mourning dress. Lord Byron was struck by his cousin's dark hair and fair face, the mingling of various lights and shades. This became the essence of his poem about her.

According to his friend, James W. Webster, "I did take him to Lady Sitwell's party in Seymour Road. He there for the first time saw his cousin, the beautiful Mrs. Wilmot. When we returned to his rooms in Albany, he said little, but desired Fletcher to give him a tumbler of brandy, which he drank at once to Mrs. Wilmot's health, then retired to rest, and was, I heard afterwards, in a sad state all night. The next day he wrote those charming lines upon her--She walks in Beauty like the Night..."

The poem was published in 1815. Also in that year Lord Byron wrote a number of songs to be set to traditional Jewish tunes by Isaac Nathan. Lord Byron included "She Walks in Beauty" with those poems.

She walks in beauty, like the night

Of cloudless climes and starry skies;

And all that's best of dark and bright

Meet in her aspect and her eyes:

Thus mellow'd to that tender light

Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,

Had half impair'd the nameless grace

Which waves in every raven tress,

Or softly lightens o'er her face;

Where thoughts serenely sweet express

How pure, how dear their dwelling place.

And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,

So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,

The smiles that win, the tints that glow,

But tell of days in goodness spent,

A mind at peace with all below,

A heart whose love is innocent!

Discussion of the Poem

The first couple of lines can be confusing if not read properly. Too often readers stop at the end of the first line where there is no punctuation. This is an enjambed line, meaning that it continues without pause onto the second line. That she walks in beauty like the night may not make sense as night represents darkness. However, as the line continues, the night is a cloudless one with bright stars to create a beautiful mellow glow. The first two lines bring together the opposing qualities of darkness and light that are at play throughout the three verses.

The remaining lines of the first verse employ another set of enjambed lines that tell us that her face and eyes combine all that's best of dark and bright. No mention is made here or elsewhere in the poem of any other physical features of the lady. The focus of the vision is upon the details of the lady's face and eyes which reflect the mellowed and tender light. She has a remarkable quality of being able to contain the opposites of dark and bright.

The third and fourth lines are not only enjambed, but the fourth line begins with an irregularity in the meter called a metrical substitution. The fourth line starts with an accented syllable followed by an unaccented one, rather than the iambic meter of the other lines, an unaccented syllable followed by an accented one. The result is that the word "Meet" receives attention, an emphasis. The lady's unique feature is that opposites "meet" in her in a wonderful way.

The second verse tells us that the glow of the lady's face is nearly perfect. The shades and rays are in just the right proportion, and because they are, the lady possesses a nameless grace. This conveys the romantic idea that her inner beauty is mirrored by her outer beauty. Her thoughts are serene and sweet. She is pure and dear.

The last verse is split between three lines of physical description and three lines that describe the lady's moral character. Her soft, calm glow reflects a life of peace and goodness. This is a repetition, an emphasis, of the theme that the lady's physical beauty is a reflection of her inner beauty.

Lord Byron greatly admired his cousin's serene qualities on that particular night and he has left us with an inspired poem.

The poem was written shortly before Lord Byron's marriage to Anna Milbanke and published shortly after the marriage.

The Cele Kula: The Last of the Skull Towers

Duke Stevan Sindjelic sacrificed his life on May 19, 1809 battling for Serbian independence against the Ottoman Turks, and in the process attained the status of an almost mythic national hero. The three thousand troops under his command were attempting to hold the hill of Cegar in the city of Ni against vastly superior forces, and were worn to the point of exhaustion. According to the legends surrounding the battle, Sindjelic realized defeat was inevitable and set fire to a large ammunition dump, forfeiting his own life and those of his troops. Sindjelic's act ensured that the Turkish victory was Pyrrhic-it cost the Turks more than they gained-and in an attempt to terrorize the local populace and break any further resistance the bodies of the Serbian soldiers were decapitated, and their heads sent to Istanbul as trophies. The Ottoman sultan, however, returned the heads to Ni, deciding they would be more effective built into a tower by a busy road to serve as a permanent and highly visible symbol of the futility of rebellion.

The resulting Skull Tower of Ni, or the Cele Kula as it properly called, was hardly a novel idea. In fact, it represented the last-and today the only surviving-example of what had been a long-standing Middle Eastern and Central Asian tradition. Monuments which commemorated military victories by displaying the remains (usually the heads) of vanquished enemies dated back at least the fourteenth century, and most frequently took the form of a tower or pyramid. The most infamous were constructed by Tamerlane, who erected them outside of both Baghdad and Isfahan; one was supposedly built out of 100,000 skulls. Such structures were considered the most effective means to simultaneously celebrate a victory and break any remaining morale among those who survived the defeat. The tradition spread as far east as India-one, built by Akbar, is known from Mughal miniatures.

Even before the Cele Kula, Europeans were familiar with this tradition, principally because of the Burj-er-Roos (Tower of Skulls) on the island of Jerbeh off the coast of Tunis. It was a conical masonry structure about 30 feet high, set all around with the heads of Spaniards who had been massacred by Saracens in the late sixteenth century. The exact history of the Burj-er-Roos is murky, but the story as it was most commonly told involved Spanish troops landing on the island en route from Malta to Tripoli, under a commander whose name is usually given as Juan de la Saera. The Spaniards made their way up from the beach and sacked the nearest town, raping and pillaging at will. The locals, meanwhile, bided their time for a counter attack-they waited until night, when the Spanish troops were drunk and the high tide had cut them off from their vessels on the beach, and slaughtered them to a man. The tower constructed by the victors was topped with the head of de la Saera himself, and reasonable estimates are that it contained the heads of perhaps 800 Spaniards. The Burj-er-roos was a popular site for travelers along the southern coast of Mediterranean Sea through the mid-nineteenth century, but it was finally dismantled in 1848 by Christian inhabitants of the island, who wished to bury the skulls in a Catholic cemetery.1

The Cele Kula is the last skull tower ever constructed; in fact, it was archaic even at its conception since the practice had long been out of style, but was intended to shock the Serbs with its anachronistic display of Old World barbarity. While it may have succeeded in that aim initially, in the end its value became something very different-it wound up being seen not as a mark of humiliation, but a symbol of bravery and heroic sacrifice, and when Ni was liberated in 1878 the decision was made to preserve it as a patriotic monument. The tower proved to be such a potent memorial that was sanctified in 1892 when a chapel was built around it. Still enclosed in the small domed chapel, the Cele Kula has become a curious nexus in the cultural life of Ni. For some it holds the status of a sacred relic, for others it is a bizarre curiosity; it attracts serious students of history, but also people with entirely different interests-including a local man who owns a white goose which he claims can commune with the souls of the dead soldiers whose skulls are present in the tower, and pass on messages to their descendents.

Those who visit the Cele Kula now are seeing it in a greatly deteriorated state. The Turks intended it as a warning to rebellious Serbs, not as a monument that would last for two centuries. Technically its construction its crude, and exposure to the elements during the nineteenth century caused the mortar to deteriorate to the point that large numbers of the skulls had come loose, or simply fallen to the ground. Many were taken by locals, either because they wanted to bury them or because they wanted them as mementos. From afar, the stories told during the nineteenth century of the Cele Kula conjured fantastic visions of a gigantic edifice stacked with crania, but this was a far cry from the reality of its condition. The tower was originally composed as a square with 14 rows of 17 skulls per side, for a total of 952, and it quickly fell into disrepair, even as its myth became increasingly glorified and its size and condition greatly exaggerated. A traveler in the 1830s published an account claiming there were 600 skulls on each side, which would be a total of 2400.2 That number was bettered considerably by the Frenchman Alphonse de la Martine, who also visited in the 1830s and published a memoir in the 1840s which declared "there might be from fifteen to twenty thousand" skulls present.3 Both accounts were trumped by an 1854 book which inexplicably described "a pyramid of 30,000 Chistian skulls (Servians), victims of the Turkish sword."4

Such outrageous accounts caused visitors to the site to be bitterly disappointed. A traveler in the 1830s expressed his disappointment, calling it a "petty affair," and reporting that in reality there were only a few skulls still remaining.5 By mid-century it had fallen into such disrepair that it was being openly mocked by visitors. An Englishman reported that he found birds nesting in the holes where the skulls had once been, and that a "sparrow's eggs were being hatched in the brainless peri-cranium of an ancient Serbian patriot."6 The decrepit block currently holds some 60 skulls, but since more forthright reports indicate that some of these were returned during attempts to rehabilitate the structure, the reality is that visitors to Ni in the late 1800s arrived to find the tower almost completely denuded of skulls. Efforts to restore the Cele Kula began with the recognition of its patriotic value in the late nineteenth century. The decision to enclose it in the chapel was in part made to help protect what remained, and the tower is now enclosed behind a glass wall so that visitors are unable to touch it, and help ensure that this unique monument-the last of its kind-will be preserved for future generations.

The final factor pushing up the appeal of Turkish property as an investment commodity is the fact that politically Turkey is developing stronger and stronger international relations. On the one hand Turkey is moving closer to EU entry and to that end the Turkish authorities have certainly done and are continuing to do all they can to align policies and decisions with those acceptable to the EU, and if EU entry comes then inward investment will soar even further. On the other hand Turkey already has an excellent standing with NATO, it already has good export levels in place with Europe and now it is positively aligning more and more with nations to the east of its borders.

In 2006 Turkey and the United Arab Emirates cemented political and economic friendship ties and Turkey remains an ally of many countries in Asia, it is a Muslim country without any shadow of fundamentalism hanging over it meaning it is a friend of Western countries from the US to the UK and as it shares cultural and religious understanding with many Asian and Arabic nations it is also a friend of countries to the east of it meaning it is incredibly well placed strategically for acting as a bridge between eastern and western understanding.

As you can see, all factors point favourably to the ongoing desirability of Turkey as a place to live, holiday, work, do business and invest and therefore 2007 is likely to be a significant year in terms of the levels of investment into property by international investors.

Many military personnel change their personal residences more frequently than the average civilian. When it comes time to sell the property, one specific question that comes up right away is: does a military real estate sale avoid capital gains tax?

Because military personnel are forced to move so often, this exacerbates the questions and concerns all of us have when it comes time to decide whether to keep or sell a particular property. With the recent run up in real estate prices, the good news is most of these properties have lots of appreciation. The bad news is the government likes to tax that appreciation. This has many in the military wondering that since they work for the government is there any special treatment? In other words, does a military real estate sale avoid capital gains tax?

Fortunately there is some special good news for those in the armed services. Specifically, the news is for military your real estate sale may avoid capital gains tax! Here's how it works:

As you are probably aware, if you sell your home for more than you originally paid, the resulting profit is known as capital gain. If your capital gain is no more than $250,000 for an individual (or $500,000 for married couples) the IRS says you can avoid paying capital gains tax as long as you have lived in the house for two out of the past five years. And, actually everyone gets this same "exclusion" amount. But, for military homeowners, while the law is essentially the same as it is for civilian homeowners; it does come with one important exception.

In 2003, Congress passed the Military Family Tax Relief Act, which allows both military and foreign-service personnel to suspend the normal residency period for up to ten years as long as they are stationed at least fifty miles from their property. Basically, if you have been away due to military service for no more than ten years, and have used it as a primary residence for at least two years out of the past fifteen, than you will most likely qualify for exempt status as long as your capital gain is below the maximum amount! Again, this is great news for those in the armed services who were wondering does a military real estate sale avoid capital gains tax? It is also good news for military personnel who are interested in buying a home and might otherwise have been discouraged by the normal residency requirements.

Note, if you own an investment property (not your primary personal residence) that has the potential to net a gain greater than the maximum amount allowed for exemption, this rule does not apply. The normal deferral techniques, such as the 1031 exchange rules, are applicable.

Does Memory Reside Inside the Brain

On Jun 2, 2005, NBC Philadelphia had an interesting report. Christina Santhouse had caught a virus that caused a rare brain disorder known as Rasmussen's Syndrome at an age of 8. And her doctor had to perform hemispherectomy, removal of half of the brain, on her. After 10 years, Christina was about to graduate from high school with honors. After the surgery, she had a slight limp and her left hand didn't work at all. She had also lost her peripheral vision, but otherwise, she was an ordinary teen. A similar case was reported on Telegraph (UK) on May 29, 2002, a girl named Bursa had the same disorder and her left brain was removed when she was 3, she became fluent in Dutch and Turkish when she was 7. In 1987, A. Smith reported that one patient with hemispherectomy had completed college, attended graduate school and scored above average on intelligence tests. Studies have found no significant long-term effects on memory, personality, or humor after the procedure, and minimal changes in cognitive function overall.

The outcome of hemispherectomy is surprising. Neuroscience tends to suggest memory is stored in the neurons in the brain. If that premise stands true, removing half of the brain would destroy one's memory if memory is stored in the network structure of neurons as one school of cognitive physiology suggests, or at least destroy half of the memory if bits of memory information are stored in individual neurons in the brain as suggested by another school of cognitive neuroscience. But it is apparent that the results disagree with either of the explanations. Removing part of the brain has been one of the standard surgical operations for severe epilepsy and has been performed thousands of times. Many of the results are quite similar to those of hemispherectomy.

The orthodox explanation for the observation is that information stored in the infected brain areas is duplicated in the health part of the brain prior to the surgery. This rationalization is still inadequate when you take into account how a brain surgery is performed. Surgeon has to remove the infected area and some surrounding health tissue, sometimes a much larger tissue than the infected area, to make sure infection does not spread. If the information stored in the infected areas is reproduced somewhere in the brain before surgical procedure, some information is still lost when surrounding health brain tissue is removed, consequently the memory would suffer.

This is not observed after the surgery. So it is necessary to assume that the memory stored in the neighboring health tissue is also replicated in other parts of the brain. This raises a question: how does the brain know how much health tissue is going to be taken out? If the brain does not know, surgeries will inevitable destruct part of the memory. The belief that memory is stored in the brain (in neurons or in the network of neurons) apparently contradicts with findings in brain surgeries.

In the 1920s Karl Lashley conducted a series of experiments trying to identify which part of the brain memories are stored. He trained rats to find their way through a maze, and then made lesions in different parts of the cerebral cortex in an attempt to erase its original memory trace. His experimental animals were still able to find their way through the maze no matter where he put lesions on their brains. He therefore concluded that memories are not stored in any single area of the brain, but are instead distributed throughout it. Distributing the memory of every single event over the whole brain is energetically inefficient and mathematically impossible. If his reasoning is not confined to the brain, the logical conclusion should be that memory is not stored in the brain.

Instincts are obviously inherited and nobody has any slight idea where the information making up the instincts is stored, and cognitive memory is thought to be acquired through experience and stored by changing the signal chemicals in the neurons in the brain.

New research reveals that even cognitive memory can be inherited. A study by Larry Feig at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston indicates that mother mice that receive mental training before they become pregnant can pass on their cognitive benefits to their young even there is no direct contact among the mothers and their offspring. It is obvious that the cognitive memory is not acquired by the young through experience, and there is no apparent way for the young to store the information in their neurons, then where do the young retrieve the memory from? Maybe from where they store their instincts information, a place nobody knows yet.

"Brain areas such as the hippocampus, the amygdala, the striatum, or the mammillary bodies are thought to be involved in specific types of memory. For example, the hippocampus is believed to be involved in spatial learning and declarative learning, while the amygdala is thought to be involved in emotional memory. Damage to certain areas in patients and animal models and subsequent memory deficits is a primary source of information. However, rather than implicating a specific area, it could be that damage to a pathway traveling through the area is actually responsible for the observed deficit" (excerpt from http://www.wikipedia.com). If one stores all his possessions in a warehouse connected to his house through a highway, he would not be able to get anything from the warehouse if the highway is broken down. To infer that everything is stored on the highway based on the facts he can not get anything when the highway is interrupted is ridiculous. Even the connection between the brain and memory is well established, it is beyond logic to conclude that memory reside inside the brain.

Wilder Penfield was a pioneer in associating particular type of memory with specific area in the brain. When he was conducting surgeries to remove specific types of temporal lobe loci which were causing epilepsy, he made ground-breaking discoveries by taking notice that his un-anesthetized patients (with local pain blockers) could listen and respond to his questions while their temporal lobe was being operated upon. Indeed, the verbal feedback by the patient was an essential requirement so that Penfield could determine that he was excising exact portion of the brain which was the cause of the neurological symptoms being treated. He would insert an electrode into patient's brain and provide electrical stimulation to see how the patient responds.

One of Penfield's patients heard a specific music selection being performed by an orchestra "when a point on the superior surface of the right temporal lobe was stimulated after removal of the anterior half of the lobe." The sound was so clear that the patient believed that there was a phonograph in the operating room. As the same point was re-stimulated (without withdrawing the electrode, only stop and re-supply electrical stimulus) the music began at the same spot in time where it had previously begun.

When Penfield withheld the electrode, the patient heard nothing. He found that the patient could not guess what was to happen after the electrode had been withdrawn. "L.G. saw a man fighting. When the point was re-stimulated he saw a man and a dog walking along a road." Often the memory is no longer able to be recalled.

At the beginning of his career in brain surgery, Penfield reasoned memory must be stored somewhere in the brain and the stimulus opened the gate of river of memory. His work originated numerous researches to associate memory and emotion to specific area in the brain. Penfield's continuous research convinced him that memory can not exist in the brain. He and his colleague reported that removing more cortex after injury to the brain raised the Intelligence Quotient. In one case, he was surprised to find out that his patient's Intelligence Quotient went from 75 to 80 - 95 after he made extensive bilateral removal of the prefrontal lobes. William Cone reported similar result after removing part of his patient's brain. Penfield's continued work, especially on hippocampus and cortex, had changed his views on brain, consciousness and memory mechanism. He late suggested that the interpretive cortex of the temporal lobes acts as a bridge, and the hippocampus holds "keys of access" to those past recorded experiences which are located somewhere outside of the brain.

Philosopher William James had a technically different but very similar view on consciousness as Penfield. He held that consciousness operates through the brain rather than the brain producing consciousness. The notion that consciousness is separated from the body has a long tradition in the west thinkers. Plato portrayed the earthly body as a limiting factor on conscious experience. Kant insinuated the body as "an imposition to our pure spiritual life". The idea matured into a proposition called Transmission Hypothesis --- brain and body serve not as the originators of consciousness but rather as its trans-receiver. The cited supporting evidences for this hypothesis are mostly in the typically considered unscientific fields, such as, psychedelic research, psi effect, after death experience, etc.. As a result this hypothesis is ill received within the philosophic and scientific community. But that does not mean they are wrong, to separate consciousness from body might a very sensible thing to do in the light of above facts.

Since memory does not reside inside the brain, the functions of the brain need to be reinvestigated. It is possible that the brain acts as a bridge to consciousness as suggested by Penfield, or a trans-receiver suggested by William James. The similarity between the two is obvious, and the brain is the only pathway to consciousness and memory for both cases. The importance of brain to memory has been supported by a vast number of critical researches over a long history. But the evidence to suggest that the brain is the only organ associated with memory is lacking, on the contrary, some evidences suggest that the heart might be associated with memory too.

Does the heart have memory? The question has been around for years. The question arises anew after years of transplanting the heart or other organs into human beings and noticing some changes in the recipients. After having had heart transplants some recipients have noticed profound changes in their personalities. For some, there is an overwhelming need to consume quantities of Mexican foods when that type of cuisine was never a favorite. For others, a sudden love for football, when sports were previously hated, comes into play.

How can these phenomena be explained? Can the heart actually feel, think, and remember? The answer could shed light on how memory is handled by human.

Rollin MacCraty from California's Hearthmath University has devised tests which show how the heart processes information. His tests showed that the heart responded before the brain when encountering an emotional event. He concluded the heart must have the ability to process emotional data.

To associate heart with memory is a legitimate proposition based on these findings. But there is no medical evidence indicating that changing the heart to a mechanical heart leads to memory loss. This implies memory is not stored in the heart. Could it be because that heart does not store memory but is a gateway to the memory? What kind of memory can be accessed through heart? Are other organs gateways to limited memory too? These questions ask for expanding memory research to a much wider ground besides the brain.

The inevitable question is, if memory is not inside the brain, where does memory reside? The short answer is: we don't know. Scientific pursuit has always been looking for evidence to support a logic conclusion derived from a general theory. If the general theory is fundamentally flawed, the progressing of science will stop and wait for convincing evidence to overturn the general theory. Only from there, science will flourish again on the new foundation. Materialism has been very successful for the advancement of living standard and scientific queries. Recent research in quantum mechanics suggests reality in a more basic level might not be materialism at all. Memory might be in a physical form we do not know or reside outside our physical world. We shall wait for new evidence to emerge.

British, Turkish Paragliders Crash, Rescued With Helicopter

British and a Turkish paragliding pilots who crashed onto a rocky area were rescued with a helicopter in southwestern Turkish province of Mugla on Saturday. Paul Hayvard and Sukan Sahin were flying tandem over Oludeniz near Babadag Mountain in Fethiye district when they encountered turbulence at some 1700 meters. Hayvard and Sahin crashed from some 60 feet onto the rocky and mountainous area shortly after they took off due to contrary wind. The 40-year old Briton sustained several injuries and suffered bleeding after the crash while Sahin, the 29-year old Turkish pilot, survived the accident with slight injuries. The two paragliders were rescued and lifted by a steel rope to the military helicopter belonging to Turkish Air Forces and taken to Fethiye State Hospital for further treatment. Oludeniz is a lagoon near Babadag Mountain in Fethiye district, a world-famous beach resort for paragliding opportunities. Last month, a German paragliding pilot, Karsten Frohlich, also collapsed near the same area and was rescued with a helicopter. Frohlich's ribs were broken with the impact of the crash.

Harriet Beecher Stowe and Slavery - A Study From an Islamic Attitude

If there is one thing I developed during my lifetime, it is an acute awareness of the growing violence and conflict worldwide. Living in an era in which contributions aiming to the betterment of human life are becoming the most important ones. I feel that it is our duty to fascinate by the idea that the written word can alter individual lives, affect one's identity, and perhaps even shape national consciousness.

In this spirit, I chose Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852). Taking as a starting point Abraham Lincoln's suggestion that Mrs. Stowe's writing changed the course of history. President Lincoln allegedly greeted Mrs. Stowe with these memorable words, "So you're the little woman who wrote the book that made this Great War!" Abraham Lincoln, like Harriet Beecher Stowe, believed that the power of words can alter the minds and hearts of individuals.

His words, therefore, serve not as a statement of truth about Uncle Tom's Cabin's effects, but rather as a provocation to pose a series of questions: How and with what implications might this kind of novelistic influence be possible? How does its depiction of characters and ideological positioning reveal Harriet Beecher Stowe's attitude towards slavery? And most importantly what would 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' look like if it was set in a Muslim society? These primary questions will be answered along my research on this subject.

'Uncle Tom's Cabin' is dominated by a single theme: slavery. Harriet Beecher Stowe pushed ahead her theme of the immorality of slavery on almost every page of the novel, "The most dreadful part of slavery, to my mind, is its outrages of feelings and affections-the separating of families, for example." One way Beecher Stowe showed the evil of slavery was how this "peculiar institution" forcibly separated families from each other.

It is worth bearing in mind that Harriet Beecher Stowe, in her 'Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin', explains different systems of servitude in different religions. One of them is not Islam, though among all the religions it was only Islam that attacked the very foundations of this evil, Harriet might not have learnt this.

By examining the different narratives we can get insights of changes in the American culture, such as the slowly changing views of Christianity, life in America, and life as a slave in America.

A-Origins of Slavery:

Speaking about the origins of this institution, we realize that slavery was not invented by Christianity or Islam. It was there long before these religions came into being. The practice of slavery is coeval with human existence; historically, its traces are visible in every age and in every nation. The cause for the apparition of slavery was the conflict existing between the earliest civilizations or between a tribe and another. Those conflicts were over power and domination, it was lust after power. Each tribe fought for the spread of its religion and ideology. But the leaders of those tribes took advantage from this pretext to enslave human beings and force them to obey the rules imposing the superiority of one race over the other.

Slavery is broadly described by the United Nations (UN) as the condition of a person over whom any or all of the powers connected to the right of ownership are exercised.

It would be of interest to note that the word "slave" is of European origin. It came into existence when the Franks used to supply the Spanish slave market with the "barbarians," and those captives happened to be mostly the people of Turkish origin from the region known as Slovakia (now a part of Czechoslovakia). These people are called "Slav" and so all captives came to be known as "slaves".

History provides that slavery was practiced with abandon in the case of debtors; war captives were either killed or made slaves. In weaker nations, people were hunted like animals, killed or captured and reduced to slavery. It had its roots in commerce, in social structure, in agriculture undertakings; and reason alone was but a feeble weapon against a foe so insidious and so deeply rooted. Then, how was slavery to be eradicated?

B-The Contrastive Attitudes towards Slavery:

1-Western Attitude towards Slavery:

Before we turn to the Islamic perspective of slavery, let us see if Christianity as a system and as a creed did anything in the earliest time to alleviate the lot of slaves. During colonial America, the Christian churches admonished the slaves to be obedient, their priests blessed the ships carrying human cargoes, but they never urged the masters to be kind. Christianity adopted the system without any endeavor to mitigate its baneful character, or promise its gradual abolition, or to improve the status of slaves. Under the civil law, slaves were mere chattels. The slaves whether of native or foreign birth, whether acquired by war or purchase, were regarded simply as chattels. Their masters possessed the power of life and death over them.

This can be illustrated from historical records, an extract from the book Freedom from Fear or the Slave and his Emancipation by O. A. Sherrard, shows how and to what degree Christian America meted out the most inhuman treatment to the defenseless Blacks. This will also show their debased beliefs and notions about human beings who differed from them in colour and race.

"The lot of plantation slaves was really very hard. The job assigned to him was, from his point of view, skilled; he was to cultivate a crop unknown to him - for the most part sugar in the West Indies, cotton or tobacco in America - and, in that his work was novel, he endured a heavier burden than his counterpart in Greece or Rome or among the serfs of Europe... All was new and strange to him; he had, therefore, to be broken in; he had to be taught his new duties; he had to be seasoned' as the saying was. 'Seasoning' was a euphemism for a harsh discipline, which was reckoned by the opponents of slavery to carry off not less than twenty per cent of those who underwent it. May be that was over the mark, but it must nonetheless be admitted that large numbers died. The discipline was painful, and there was little to ameliorate and much to embitter its seventy."

O. A. Sherrard describes how slavery was introduced into England's colonies in America and the terrible stages of suffering that the slaves had to go through. They had to work or rather they were forced to work in inhuman conditions on the newly acquired plantations of their masters. This example gives you in a nutshell what I intend to examine in this work.

While reading Uncle Tom's Cabin, we could comprehend Harriet Beecher Stowe's personal vision and that of many other people upon the institution of slavery. It is useful to think of America in the first half of the nineteenth century not as one large country but as two separate nations. The America of the North was rushing towards modernity as it underwent its urban and industrial revolutions. The Southern states had largely remained the agrarian, slave-based economy they were in Jefferson's time. Thus, the United States was two countries, two cultures, two ideologies that were destined for a collision.

Speaking about ideologies, the Northern people didn't reconcile with the institution of slavery, Southerners did, and each section found moral and philosophical justification over the question of slavery. While Northerners found it unprofitable to own slaves (industrial capitalist fabric of their society), Southerners couldn't forsake their reliance on slave labor. Economy plays an important role in the separation and difference between the two ideologies. 'It is difficult', writes Dr.Gray, 'to avoid the assumption that opposition to the slave system was at first confined to a group who gained no direct advantage from it, and consequently possessed an objective attitude.'...

Harriet Beecher Stowe cited the interests of capital in her novel; the narrator pinpoints the reason why slavery continued, for instance, in the case of Emmeline's sale: one of the New York partners is uneasy with the sale of human beings as a part of his transaction, but he found himself obliged to do it in favor of what he knows to be profitable despite the fact that he knows that this is morally wrong. While it is illegal for residents of New York to own slaves, it is of course not illegal for such business to be conducted. The New York businessman, in capitulating to the sale of slaves, makes essentially the same decision that was made by the Ohio senator, Bird: one in favor of larger "public interests" than morality.

Beside the economic justifications that are of first importance, the religious ones are very significant. Christian churches found scripture for enslaving the uncivilized people. One of their arguments was they were saving them from their cannibal neighbours in this world, and from eternal disgrace in the life hereafter.

The part played by the Christian churches in the slave trade is well exposed in the words of Mr Alpers who writes, that the Christians "were aware that to sell their fellow human beings could not be morally justified. Yet the Christian church came forward with excuses for the slave trade. Many priests themselves carried on slave trade, especially in Angola, and many others owned slaves in the Americas. The only reason the Catholic Church gives for its action was that it was trying to save African souls by baptizing the slaves. The Protestants were worse, for they did not even make it clear that they accepted that the Africans had a soul. Instead, they supported the view that the African slave was a piece of property like furniture or a domestic animal. There is no part of the history of Christian church which was more disgraceful than its support of the Atlantic slave-trade."

We perceive these excuses as apologies, there is no need to make such apologies, and they are but awkward apologies.

The only redress prescribed by Christianity is seen in the letter of St. Paul to a certain Philemon sending back to him his slave, Onessimus, with a recommendation to treat him well.

Throughout her novel, Harriet Beecher Stowe was at pains to illustrate the fact that the system of slavery and the moral code of Christianity oppose each other. "You ought to educate your slaves, and treat them like reasonable creatures" No Christian, she insists, should be able to tolerate slavery. Harriet Beecher best pointed this fact in her characterization of Eva, the most morally balanced white character in the novel. Eva fails to understand why anyone would see a difference between blacks and whites. In contrast, the morally revolting, nonreligious Legree practices slavery almost as a policy of deliberate blasphemy and evil. Christianity, in Mrs. Stowe's novel, rests on a principle of universal love. If all people were to put this principle into practice, Harriet Beecher Stowe insists, it would be impossible for one segment of humanity to oppress and enslave another.

Harriet Beecher Stowe uses Christianity and what makes a good Christian versus what makes a bad or hypocritical one. Her opinions were largely held by the Quakers and a lot of other Americans who believed in universal brotherhood. She was convincing them of the evil that the institution of slavery was causing, and she succeeded in bringing the light to the harsh reality of life for the slaves. Despite her effort to change the attitudes of Americans towards black people in her portraying of some characters like Mrs. Ophelia who opposed slavery but held prejudice against black people, she couldn't change the attitude of the white masters towards their slaves; and what a bitter legacy of racial antipathy has it left!

As Professor D. W. Brogan writes in the introduction of Dr. Eric William' magnificent book Capitalism and Slavery, "the abolition of the slave-trade, and abolition of the slavery, were not merely the results of a rising standard of political ethics but were a form of cutting of losses." We understand that money dominated and controlled the issue. Again, capitalism and religion bring two contrastive issues.

Even after the American Emancipation Declaration, Toynbee writes, "The Blacks in the United States who were emancipated juristically in 1862 are, with good reason, feeling now, more than a century later, that they are still being denied full human rights by the white majority of their fellow-citizens." One thing for certain, the racial discrimination and prejudice that the Westerners are still held towards the blacks.

To summarize, we totally agree with the words of Prof. BROGAN, who admitted that the slave system was "tolerated, defended, praised as long as it was profitable by the Westerners" Thus, abolition was the direct result of an economic distress.

2-Islamic Attitude towards Slavery:

Turning to the Islamic perspective upon the institution of slavery, we note that he vast multitude of Islamic literature is empty from this kind of pathetic effort at reformation that Stowe was doing. Let us recall a famous event that graphically shows the attitude of Islam and Christianity on the subject of slavery and race:

"Take away the black man! I can have no discussion with him," exclaimed the Christian Archbishop Cyrus when the Arab conquerors had sent a deputation of their ablest men to discuss terms of surrender of the capital of Egypt, headed by Negro 'Ubaydah as the ablest of them all. To the sacred Archbishop's astonishment, he was told that this man was commissioned by General 'Amr; that the Moslems held Negroes and white men in equal respect judging a man by his character and not by his colour." This is not the only example; black people enjoyed enormous prestige, authority, respect and freedom within the Islamic system, in all areas of life, cultural as well as political. How could this have come about?

First, Islam placed restrictions on the acquisition of slaves. It forbade its followers to enslave people on any pretext. This is best illustrated with the words of Amir Ali "The possession of a slave by the Coranic laws was conditional on a bona-fide war, waged in self-defense, against idolatrous enemies; and it was permitted in order to serve as a guarantee for the preservation of the lives of the captives." Slavery as a social institution would have ceased to exist with the discontinuance of the wars in which the Moslem nation was at first involved.

Second, Islam commenced an active campaign to emancipate the slaves. Emancipation of slaves was legally required expiation for certain sins or failures in religious duties, for example, the breaking of an oath or the breaking of a fast; and for many other trespasses; a good deed to balance or remove a lapse. For every instance, emancipation of a slave was prescribed as a penance; "an alternative was also prescribed, clearly indicating that Islam's objective was in time to create a society free from this institution.

"And those who seek a deed [of liberation] from among those [slaves] whom your right hands possess, give them the writing (kitab) if you know of goodness in them, and give them of the wealth of Allah which He has given you.."(Quran 24:33)

Third, Islam restored dignity to slaves and enhanced their social status. It made no distinction between a slave and a free man, and all were treated with equality. The Coran taught in many verses that all human beings are descended from a single ancestor, that none has an intrinsic right of superiority over another, whatever his race or his nation or his social standing.

"O you men! We have created you of a male and a female, and then We made you (into different) races and tribes so that you may know each other. Surely the most honourable of you with Allah is the one who is most pious among you; surely Allah Is All-Knowing & Aware." (The Quran 49:13)

From the Prophet's teaching, upon him be peace, the Muslims learnt these principles, which they applied both as laws and as social norms:

You should know that no white is superior over black and no black is superior over white. Superiority is by righteousness and God-fearing [alone]. (Ibn Hanbal, Musnad, p 411)

It is stated in reliable traditions from the Prophet that one should feed his slave what he himself eats and should dress him with what he himself dresses. In his famous sermon in Arafat, on 9th Dhul-hijah, during his last and only pilgrimage, the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) said, "...and your slaves, see that you feed them such food as you eat yourselves and dress him with what you yourself dress. And if they commit a mistake which you are not inclined to forgive then sell them, for they are the servants of Allah and are not to be tormented..." The Prophet Mohammad (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) clearly stated that the duty of kindness towards slaves was the same as that towards family members, neighbors and others.

Let us refer to the Coranic verse that makes the above idea crystal clear:

"Worship Allah (alone) and associate nothing with Him, and do good to parents, to kinsfolk, to orphans, to the needy, to the neighbour who is a relative, to the neighbour who is a stranger, to a companion by your side, to the wayfarer and to (the slave) which your right hands possess; verily Allah loves not the proud, the boastful. (4:36)

Moreover, every Muslim who embraced his slave as a brother, encouraged him to work for his freedom, observed all his rights, helped him support a family, to found him a place in the society before emancipating him, might well be pleased with an institution that opened to him a means of pleasing God. The example that comes first to mind is that of Zayd bin Haritha who was brought up in the Prophet's own household and set free. He married a noblewoman, he was appointed as the commander of a Muslim army which included many of a noble birth. But one might swell the list of examples to many thousands if one had the space.

Beside such sanctions which made the master behave with care, the slave also enjoyed the legal right to buy his freedom, and if necessary should be given the opportunity to earn money, or be lent money by the state, in order to do so. The slave has the right to have a family and family life with the attendant rights and obligations. As well as personal dignity and a degree of material security, the Islamic laws and norms allowed the slave a still more precious opening-the hope and means of freedom.

Islam also declared that any female slave who bore a child by her master could not be sold and, on her master's death, she became automatically a free woman. Moreover; it ordained that the child born to a slave woman by her master should follow the status of the father. The Prophet Mohammad (upon him be peace) stated that when a slave owner had a child with a female slave, the child should be freed and could inherit from the father like any other child (as in the case of Ibrahim, his own son from Maria, a Coptic slave whom he freed and took her as his wife.) It was also ordered that in no case should the mother be separated from her child, nor brother from brother, nor father from son, nor husband from wife, nor one relative from another.

No wonder the disappointing surprise turns into a shock with the depiction of the treatment of slaves in Uncle Tom's Cabin. The quadroon women together with their children from their masters, in Uncle Tom's Cabin, come back to our minds in terms of a shocking difference in their status and treatment. In an Islamic world, those women would not be under the threat of separation from their families; they wouldn't be deprived from their bodily autonomy and marital chastity. Their children would not be early traumatized by being sold away from their mothers'. Alongside, a man forced to take another woman as his wife or a woman is fleeing because her child is to be sold would be unrealistic in a Muslim work. Humanity is retained and the contrast with the non Islamic behavior becomes almost fictional only.

This constructive and positive treatment necessarily had a consequence on the attitudes of slaves to their masters. The slave as slave still retained his humanity and moral dignity and a place beside other members of his master's family.

3-Analysis of the Results:

We understand, accept, and appreciate Harriet Beecher Stowe's urgent call to all the Americans, men and women, of any skin colour; to embrace the very values of love and brotherhood that are original in Christianity. But it would be of interest to give a clear demonstration of what would happen if Harriet Beecher Stowe learnt about Islam. She would be astonished, of course, that the message behind her writing of Uncle Tom's Cabin has already been tackled by Islam. Her effort will not be centered pathetically on reformation but invulnerably attraction to Islam. She would treat the issue of slavery in another way.

Among all the religions, it was only Islam that aimed at striking at the roots of slavery, at changing the attitude and mentality of the whole society, so that after emancipation, slaves would become its full-fledged members.

This achievement, effected 1400 years ago, is a far cry from the failure of Christianity in this 2008 where, in Christian USA. If a black candidate becomes the president, it is considered big news. Such kind of thinking was, and still is, unthinkable in Islam.

You see the implication of this news. Someone from the black people is to be selected on political grounds even though he is black. This revolution of values in the USA, the most powerful and richest nation in the world, changed the way society views itself, shifting from an object-orientated society to a person-orientated society. This is what the reverend Martin Luther King dreamt of almost half a century ago, that racism would be capable of being conquered and the USA would be "Free at last".

More importantly, we note that this leader and social activist of the Civil Rights Movement, who served as the cause of peace and justice for all humans, called for strength and courage and told his fellowship, "I want you to love your enemies. Be good to them. Love them and let them know you love them." Therefore, Mr. King's love for the human race is identical to that of Beecher Stowe's protagonist "Uncle Tom". Martin Luther King and Harriet Beecher Stowe called for obedience to Jesus Christ, who loved his enemies so fully. Their ability to speak the truth is another value that made them such influential historic leaders. We regard Harriet Beecher as an American national leader when she wrote the book that shook the conscience of the Americans, which influenced the American culture, and that achieved Mrs. Stowe's aim which is reformation. Although Harriet Beecher Stowe was allegedly accused, in the words of President Abraham Lincoln, of being the woman who wrote the book that started the American Civil War; her aim was at ending the legal institution of slavery by convincing people of this evil peacefully and non-violently, but it is the irony of life that turned of her book together with other factors a time bomb that would inevitably explode shortly.

Islam achieved the end of slavery without any need of demonstrations, strikes, civil disobedience and racial riots, with its attack in which neither arms were being raised, nor was blood spilled. Islam succeeded where every other religion and system has failed so far. It helped to create a culture in which slaves became much more assimilated into the community than they were in the West, by absorbing the slaves in Muslim societies without any regard of their skin colour or origin. We cannot but admire the tremendous success of Islam in this field.

In short, it is not only the institution of slavery that causes revulsion in the human heart; it is the attitudes of inhumanity which sustain it. And the truth is, if the institution no longer formally exists but the attitudes persist, then humanity has not gained much, if at all.

As a concluding word, slavery has existed from the beginning and will last in one form or another as long as men lust after power. Slavery is only one form of the disguising evil which, after centuries of the dreadful exploitation of human beings, ably changes its form. That is why colonial exploitation replaced slavery, and also why the chains of unbearable international debt have replaced colonial exploitation: only slavery has gone, its structures of inhumanity and barbarism are still securely in place.

This has resulted in more misery, more murder, more degradation, more sadness, suffering and sin than any other human institution. Slavery crushes individuals; it blights communities; it sours all human intercourse, for its sign-manual is fear.

But we do not share this pessimistic view. We realize that the problem is gigantic, but we also know that Islam is the Religion sent by Allah, the Omnipotent. Islam, 1400 years ago brought three-sided program for eradication of slavery: blocking the ways of acquiring new slaves, emancipation, and restoration of the human dignity to the slaves.

It is imperative that a greater understanding of the psychological, cultural, political, and societal roots of human cruelty be developed. We need to continue examining in our creative works the factors which enable individuals collectively and individually to perpetrate evil and the impact of apathetic bystanders as fuel for human violence.

This is called stimulus addiction. The term "stimulus addiction" describes the habit that is formed as kids seek out more and more stimulating games to hold their interest. Instead of playing in their natural world, kids are spending more and more time playing in the artificially constructed world of video games.

Often kids start out with simple non-violent video games and move into increasingly violent games because violent games are the most stimulating. They require the part of our brain that reacts, rather than reasons. Violent video games focus on the constant need to destroy in order to stay in the game. Violent images increase arousal levels of neurotransmitters (brain chemicals) that excite and entice kids to keep playing. Video games today display more horrific violence, with sharp images and realistic graphics. Words, ideas, and images of brutality not ever imagined to be "entertainment" ten years ago currently fill up much of our kids' leisure time, habituating them to hyped stimulation in the process.

Although the fast pace and emotionally vivid images of manufactured horror are definitely habit-forming, even nonviolent games can become addictive.

Gamer addiction is a real tragedy of our times. Recently two parents expressed major concerns over too much time spent with video games:

A dad of a fourth grader overheard his nine-year old in conversation with a friend:

"I'll finish her off by ripping out her heart."
"No, cut off her head instead."
"But I want to rip her heart out."
"I want to see her head fly off."
"Oh, all right, let's see her head roll. There! Look at all that blood. Cool."

They were excitedly playing a video game they had just downloaded. This father felt lucky to overhear his son, disturbing as it was. He was able to steer the boys to non-violent games, more appropriate for their age and more in alignment with the family's values.

A mom of a fifteen year-old felt hopeless about what to do about her daughter staying up until two in the morning playing video games and not being prepared for school the next day. By coaching this mom to take the appropriate steps her daughter got back on track-with better grades and a much better attitude. It was a process that took a lot of will power on this mom's part. She stayed with it, despite difficulties, learning through the PCI Coaching to reinforce positive behaviors and open up more appropriate possibilities for her daughter.

Online gaming, in the lives of too many high school and college students, takes precedent over academics, sports, hobbies, art, dance, and other forms of self-expression. researchers have found that a survey of 1500 teenagers indicated 25% were compulsive video gamers. Fifty per cent of those surveyed used the word "addiction" to describe a friend's gaming behaviors. Because excitement becomes the reward for playing and because the games are set up to reinforce behavior intermittently, they are extremely habit-forming, and even potentially addicting.

It's easy to get lost in the fantasy worlds of screen technologies. Now with hand-held video games children as young as four years old are playing video games-despite experts warning that this could be a very detrimental habit leading to dangerous life-long problems.

Parents, the good news is that there are focused strategies you can take to prevent stimulus addiction in our ever encroaching digital culture: Think carefully and act consciously. I will personally guarantee that these five seeming simple strategies are simply powerful. They can help your child or teen in profound ways.

Five Essentials for Preventing Internet and Video Game Addiction:

1. Keep kids curious about non-screen reality.
Game playing and web surfing often stems from boredom. Kids who don't know what to do end up in front of a video game console or a computer. Yet, if there were other things to do, he or she may easily choose an alternative. Keep a list handy of age-appropriate activities, including lots of books from the local library. By enticing kids to turn to other activities when bored, chances are they won't get into a video game habit. They will know how to entertain themselves without the need for hyped stimulation. Make your home an enriched environment for all sorts of creative and artistic endeavors. Do what fires you up, too--you light a spark in your children every time you enhance and use your own creativity!

2. Give kids more control through appropriate decision-making.
Responsible autonomy means that kids make decisions and feel a sense of control over regular daily decisions. Video games tap into kids' need for control. If they only feel in control when they are playing these games, then they will naturally want to play the games more often. Give kids decisions in which you can live with either choice. An example for a young child might be: "Do you want to wear the blue of yellow shirt today?" Both have long sleeves and will keep the child warm. An example for an older child or teen might be: "When is a good day for you to help me with dinner this week?" You acknowledge that the child's schedule is in his/her control-giving over this decision when you can be flexible about the outcome. The more your child or teen makes, values, and sees the effects of his/her decisions, the less likely he or she will be crave external stimulus to feel pleasure. Mindful activities will become more pleasurable as your child develops a strong sense of self through internal control.

3. Broaden kid's sources of excitement.
In video game play, the excitement is the reward. The "high" of reaching another level, killing off enemies, or quickly pushing the right button at the right time engenders a rush that feeds on itself. Direct reinforcement multiplies the excitement and pleasure. If video game playing is the only source of a child's or a teen's excitement-then other activities will go by the wayside. Gamer addiction happens because there are few opportunities in which the young person feels that level of excitement brought on by a video game. When children and tees are excited about a pursuit such as sports or art, music or academics, community service or church then they have other avenues in which to feel excitement about the outcome. One of the major jobs of parenting in a media age is for moms and dads to broaden opportunities for kids to use their skills and talents. The excitement of living and creating must become the reward.

4. Teach children how to go inside themselves.
When kids know how to meander in their internal landscapes, they are more self-directed. They can entertain themselves more easily. Give children and teens time to just sit and think-even if for only five or ten minutes at a stretch. Just a tiny practice starts the bud blooming. Kids will come to need this kind of "inside time." Before asking a question you can say, "Before you respond honey, I want you to take a minute to think about your answer." Consciously giving "think-time" provides a powerful model that it's important to take the time necessary to carefully consider an idea. Most video games are fast. They do not grow that part of the brain that is used in thoughtful reflection. This takes time. It's not a quick decision. By encouraging children and teens to do some slow pondering inside themselves, parents counter gamer addiction.

5. Help children stay connected to the 3-D world through lots of physical activity.
When Play Station commands: "Play in Our World"-you better believe they know what they're doing. This is a well-thought out phrase to make children and teens believers that the video game world is the best world to play in. As illogical it may seem to most adults, youngsters do not have the thinking capacity to understand the long-term ramifications of this ad on attitude formation and the manufacturing of a need. To be "cool" a person better "play in their world." Playing video games with our kids can go a long way to modeling proper use of this great tool for a fun time-out for the real-world. But like anything else, it's a question of balance. If kids aren't getting enough exercise outside, for instance, their lives are out of balance in favor of the screen-machine. If kids don't find their competence in various 3-D world activities, they might as well be tethered to the 2-D world. Parents who take a breather to kick or toss a ball, bike or hike, model for kids the value of life beyond a small screen. By nurturing our children's innate propensity to explore the natural world, parents move kids out of the world of video games and give them the know-how and the spirit to create a better world-a world we will all enjoy playing in!

been found as far away as Gaul, Egypt and Russia.

Beseiged by Rome, Chios Greece was held next by the Persians.
Christianized while being held by the Byzantine
Empire, Chios island was next occupied by the Saracens. In
the early1200's, Venetians claimed Chios Greece, then passed
it on to the Genoese. Chios island prospered under Genoese
rule until the Turkish takeover in 1566.

In 1821, Chios Island joined in the general Greek revolt, and
for some reason was singled out for especially severe
punishment by the Turks. Most of the population was
slaughtered, enslaved or managed to escape. Over 80%
of the population was annihilated. That massacre of
1822 triggered massive outrage throughout much of
Europe, and is still remembered today.

Greeks retaliated, some time later, by blowing up a
Turkish ship in their Chios' home port. Even later,
in 1881, a massive earthquake killed many of those
living on the island. In 1912, Chios island became part of
Greece, as it is today.

As part of a series of articles on how to survive as a small retailer, this article is about the benefits and pitfalls of setting up a home delivery service.

Charges

You may not get this right first time and may need to adjust the charging in the early days until you have got it right. Do not be shy about charging for deliveries but always remember that your core business is selling goods and not making a profit from the delivery service. In fact, you may need to accept that the costs of delivery may not be covered by charging and you may decide not to charge at all and take a quantified loss. Each business is different in this regard. I would recommend that most small stores do charge for deliveries, but only with the aim of just covering, or perhaps more realistically, subsidising costs. You need to look at what your competitors are doing but do not be forced into a decision based on this one criteria. If they are providing free delivery there is no rule that you should do also. Customers will compare like for like factors such as delivery charges but remember that it is just another item on their bill, albeit an important one. If your competitor is paying for the delivery costs through higher product prices you may well find that you are competitive over many products, although you are more expensive on the delivery charge.

There are many ways to charge for delivery. Many will have set fees, regardless of quantity and distance (within a set perimeter). Others will have an inner region set at a low cost (or even free) and have one or more outer regions with progressively higher charges. It is very common to offer free delivery where the shopping bill is above a certain amount of money. This makes a lot of sense but you need to ensure that the minimum qualifying spend is set at the right amount in order to prevent unacceptable losses. Once the delivery service is bedded in you could consider offering it free for a limited period, say the first couple of months. This will get customers into a delivery routine. Many will have intended to pull out once the charges kicked in, but will have come to rely on the service. This plays on our tendency to "fill time". Many customers that have saved one hour of shopping time by taking in a delivery will soon fill the hour with another regular activity and will want to carry on with the deliveries even if they are being charged for them.

Extra Sales

If you decide to try home delivery, don't forget that this is an opportunity to add new sales to the order. If possible, have the delivery vehicle loaded with some extra products that might be required, even though they were not ordered. Even if you are using a third party, such as the local video store, to deliver to your customers, there may be a way of giving them the incentive to sell your goods at the doorstep. The obvious things to go for are staple, everyday items that people often want. Another idea is to include topical products, perhaps, depending on what kind of store you have, candy apples if it is Halloween or even sunglasses if it is a sunny day.

Database

One big difference between having customers come to your store as opposed to taking deliveries to them is that you will need to keep a track of their names, address and their shopping orders not to mention other information such as personal preferences. In order to do this you will need to keep a database. How you do this depends on your inclination and your circumstances. In some cases a
listing on paper will be fine. In most cases, though, you are likely to keep the information on a computer. Many stores that don't delivery already keep a database of customers, but many others do not. You may find there are laws in your jurisdiction that govern how databases containing individual's data can be used, especially when the information is kept electronically.

Variable Products - Getting Intimate

Certain products travel better than others. I am not talking here about your ability to protect products in transit - although this is of great importance - I am referring to products that can have different affects on different people. These are products that can vary, such as fruit and vegetables . Taking bananas as an example of a variable product, some people like them yellow/brown and ripe and others prefer them green and under-ripe. Some prefer a cabbage or lettuce with more heart and others prefer them leafy. This can be a great challenge and the larger store chains always struggle with this problem. Their answer is typically to segregate products into their potential variations, so there may be a choice between ripe bananas and under-ripe bananas. Hearty cabbage may be given a
particular name (French names are popular with the marketers), while leafy cabbage may be labelled as something completely different. Although this is workable, if you happen to have a grocery store that sells fruit and vegetables, you will be at an advantage if you get to know your customers' intimate
preferences and have a good feel for the products (literally in many cases) that they like. The trick the large chains can't pull off is to get to know each customer's preferences in intimate detail. A customer may like their bananas somewhere in between green and yellow, rather than be faced with an either/or choice. Many customers will also be unhappy having to pay premium prices for pre-sorted
products. As a grocer who knows their customers' requirements in intimate detail you can choose just the right variation of product for each of your regular customers. Rather than shy away from the challenge of variable products, use it to your advantage - it is one of the few advantages you will have over your bigger and more powerful rivals.

Personal Products

Personal products such as clothing and cosmetics usually rely on complete pre-approval before being accepted by the customer. This may mean that many customers will wish to try on a garment, or smell a perfume before paying for it. The challenge of selling such personal products may be a challenge too far, especially for a small retailer. Unless you are willing to make a night of it and perhaps like the idea of party retailing then do not attempt to sell these products.

No-one At Home

You will need to establish a procedure to deal with situations where there is nobody to receive the goods you are attempting to deliver. The database of customers can be used to keep information that will help you deal with not-at-home situations. When taking on a home delivery customer, ask them what they would like you to do with goods if they are not at home. This is not always a question that customers will help you with. "Don't worry, somebody will be home" is a typical reply. You need to decide what to do when a customer gives you this answer. You can take them at their word or you could insist that they give you an alternative (nearby) address, such as next door or perhaps agree
that the goods will be taken back to the store ready for collection by the customer. There will be other requests such as "leave in the shed round the back". Keep these arrangements in your database and have the list with you when you deliver as you can guarantee that someone will not be at home at some time. You also need to establish from the start who is responsible for the ownership of
the goods in such situations. If you leave the goods with the neighbor, is the original customer
responsible for the goods or is it the retailer. If you use a third party to deliver the goods, are they responsible? Or is it the neighbor who took the goods in? In most jurisdictions this is a legal minefield and an avoidable argument waiting to happen. It is important to get this right from the start. You can negotiate separate terms with each customer. This may sound crazy, but remember you have a database and separate terms can be entered for each customer. Remember also, that separate terms will not be available from large chain stores, so this is another area where you can offer an advantage. However, if separate terms are too onerous a task, you will need to have your customers agree to set terms and this usually means it is best to get their signature before home deliveries can begin. You will now have entered into a contract with customers covering the title to goods and responsibility for defects and damages. Remember though that a contract is not an operating procedure or a bible that you must stick to. Working to contract is a trap that too many businesses, large and small, fall into. The contract is like an insurance policy. You should only point to the detail of a contract in times of
conflict or confusion. Yes, you need to work to the spirit of the contract, but no-one will mind if you work in a flexible way around it. For example, if Mrs Smith's neighbor has been looking after her shopping and Mrs Smith found a broken egg in a pack of 12 when she collected her groceries from her neighbor, you could point out that the contract makes the customer responsible for the egg, or you could be sensible and include an extra egg when you make the next delivery. This is another potential advantage you have over the larger retailers. They generally work to contract - you can use some common sense!

Home delivery is a service that may or may not be right for your small retail operation. You need to weigh up the pros and cons. If you go ahead, be prepared to be flexible in its operation. Use your local knowledge and the intimacy you have with your customers to your advantage - now get on the road!

Land Development VS House Sales - Key Differences

Buyers of development and residential real estate pay the sellers some or all of the purchase price in exchange for a deed to the property. The similarities between these two types of transactions pretty much end there. The methodology for selecting, evaluating and pricing development property, the way the deal is structured, and the time frames for closing are radically different.

What You See & What You Get

When you're buying a home, usually everything you need to know about the property is obvious. The exterior, interior, major systems and appliances are, for the most part, visible. If you're buying land, you can't discover the relevant facts by eyeballing the property. Most of what you need to know in order to decide if you should buy it is not obvious. This is why due diligence plays such an important role in land development deals. Buyers must investigate a myriad of issues, including zoning, sub-surface conditions, wetlands, soils, topography, environmental hazards, utility line locations and floodplain areas. The need for this research continues well beyond acceptance of the buyer's offer and involves the efforts of a diverse team of players.

Settlement Time Frames

Residential resale properties change hands in 30-90 days. Transfers in new construction can require 180 days, and true custom homes might take up to a year. Time frames in land development deals tend to be much longer. Although the time elapsing between offer acceptance and closing depends on the contingencies and nature of the deal, usually settlement doesn't occur for at least 12-18 months. After a purchase contract is signed by both parties, buyers and their development teams spend months collecting all of the relevant data. During this "feasibility period," buyers determine if they want to proceed with the deal based on the information uncovered. If all systems are a "go," they would then apply for the municipal approvals (e.g., zoning, use, subdivision, land development) necessary to implement their intended development scenario.

Contingencies

Home buyers condition their offers on getting a mortgage or being satisfied with certain types of property inspections. These contingencies are usually satisfied within weeks of the offer acceptance. Several prior articles (including "Price + Terms = Land Development Contract") discuss the types of development contingencies in land deals. Land buyers don't want to have to purchase the parcel unless they are permitted to do what they want with it, so they make their purchases conditioned on zoning changes, use permissions, plan approvals and permits.

Contract Forms

Pre-printed forms used in home sale transactions are not designed to address the special needs of land deals. These contracts have to be customized to address issues unique to the potential development, subdivision and use of the parcel. Buyers and their attorneys create their own "base" contracts, ranging anywhere from 5 to 30 pages, and modify them as circumstances warrant.

Determining Market Value

Real estate agents or brokers give prospective sellers a CMA (Comparative Market Analysis) that estimates value based on recent sales of comparable properties in the area. Appraisers arrive at an opinion of value through a much more detailed analysis of the residential property and the comparable sales. Buyers estimate the value of development property by applying rules of thumb and pro forma analysis. Value is based on factors including the projected sale price (or rental income), site yield, and expenses.

Uniqueness

Although every parcel is unique, differences among residential properties are generally reduced to finite, visual conditions such as house and lot size, location, the amenities of the house and its condition. The evaluation of development real estate is more complex because it takes into account a broad range of variables that impact the suitability and development feasibility of the site. Physical features (e.g., topography, size and shape, vegetation, soils, structures), zoning classification and utility access give each parcel its own unique "fingerprint." Each property must be evaluated in the context of issues that are specific to it and that define its potential for development.

Development Team

Buyers and sellers of residential properties often turn to attorneys, real estate agents, home inspectors and financial advisers for help in the transaction. Land deals require assistance of individuals with expertise in a variety of disciplines, including civil and traffic engineers, land planners, wetlands specialists and environmental consultants. The type of property and proposed development generally dictate the size of the team and the expertise needed.

Emotions

One of the most striking differences between residential and development property transactions is the extent to which emotions influence buyers' decisions. When Mr. and Mrs. Buyer fall in love with a home, that emotional attachment can cause them to not realize that the property is fatally flawed as an investment. Not so with purchasers of development property. They cannot afford the luxury of becoming emotionally attached. Their buying decisions are based on cold, hard facts and they evaluate everything about the parcel, from its location to its natural beauty, in the context of income, expense and profit.

Meditation Made Easy - How to Meditate For Transcendence

Meditation has never been easy for beginners even for many of those with long experience. Here, I attempt to present a way that, with my over thirty years of experience, I consider to be the easiest and more effective way to succeed. There are a variety of methods proposed by experts, such as concentrating on one subject or on counting your breathing from one to four and repeating it. All these methods are aimed at clearing your mind from any other thoughts which may cause some degree of mental relaxation. As you choose and advance in any of these methods, you would be able to bring down or totally eliminate your mental depression, bodily pain, anxiety as well as fatigue from your daily work whether it is mental or physical.

It won't be easy to achieve these aims. It requires years of serious practice. It demands absolute concentration, unshakeable discipline, continuity and determination for success. These are necessary because unconsciously we have given our mind a total freedom of thought on whatever, whenever and wherever it may desire to extend. It won't be easy to harness its floating and restrict it only to one thought, one place or one situation.

The meditation methods mentioned above, if mastered, may achieve the goals mentioned above to different degrees. These goals all are related to our mental, physical and material world. The practice also discipline our mind and bring it under our control. The latter is the most resourceful attainment we may achieve. However, none of these practices extends the mind beyond our material environment and mental conditions associated with it.

The mind, which is the same as the soul or spirit, is a matterless entity with incredible capacity to expand beyond our body and our material planet into the materless world which also embodies the whole of the material Universe. The mind resides within our brain, as sitting in a pilot's cockpit controlling our physical and mental functions. To reach any distance beyond our planet, we must transcend our planet into the unlimited outer space including the whole universe. It is the only way we can reach galaxies, stars and other planets and have contacts with other civilizations. The idea of being able to travel physically to other planets outside of our solar system in the search for other civilizations is nothing more than just a wishful thinking. If we consider a spaceship with an incredible speed of 200,000 miles per hour, equal to ten times going around our planet in one hour, will take 2,200 years to travel a distance of just one light year which has a speed over 180,000 miles per second. The closest star to our planet is many light years away. For the same reason no one or being from any other planet is able to visit us by any kind of spaceship. The UFO stories do not make sense unless they are of our own creation. Therefore, meditation to transcend is the only way to reach the extremities of the Universe. This is possible because once the mind expands beyond the material world, the elements of time and space disappear. Within the sphere of the extension of the mind you can be any place in a matter of no time. This means you may travel thousands of light years at a glance so to speak.

This was the sole purpose of my attraction to meditation. The idea didn't come to me from nowhere. Based on the experiences of my childhood and further studies when I became older, I knew there were likely thousands of individuals in this planet capable of transcending to outer space and some landing in other planets with its own civilization They have been able to communicate with them and were still doing so. I later, by my own experience, learned that there are very many beings from other planets here on Earth interacting with our people and helping them to a better way of life as much as they can. Under the present limited scientific knowledge, this is almost impossible to understand. When you transcend to another planet you may live there and interact with its people, appearing under our standards of time, to amount for years, but when you return to your body, no time has past from the time of your departure. I know it is almost impossible to understand but I know it is true because I personally have experienced it.

Now that I have described my purpose for meditation, I can explain the process by which I started it, improved it and reached the best and easiest way that it can be done. From my childhood I was familiar with the extraordinary results of transcendental meditation since my father had oriental friends, particularly from India who visited him now and then and stayed with us for a day or two. These were people called fakir who through meditation had been able to gain the power of seeing the future of an individual by just looking at him or her. It was one of these fakirs who after looking at me pointedly, when I was in the process of serving tea for him, told my father that I will gain access to the world beyond ours and cause transformation in the civilization and way of life. I was only eleven year old and did not really understood the meaning of his statement at the time. I didn't know what my father thought of this but he later on told me to forget what the man had said, it didn't mean anything. I did forget all about it until about a year later a gypsy fortune teller came to our house, on my step mother's invitation, to tell her fortune. By my mothers insistence she also looked at mine. To my surprise and amazement, by opening and placing her fortune-telling cards one by one on the floor, she end up telling me nearly the same prediction made by the Indian fakir. My mother dismissed her claims which made the gypsy woman upset. Leaving the house, while passing by me, she murmured " You should believe and remember what the cards have revealed." My step mother later on told me, laughingly, not to pay any attention, they just say these things to make some money. However, I never forgot the two predictions. It remained an important force in directing me to meditation. It fortified my determination to continue and go back to it each time after I had given up because of not having any success. Some fifty years later, when I first succeeded in my transcendence, I realized the truth about the two predictions.

Initially, I had chosen to go to the top of a hill in the farm I owned next to my house. It was surrounded by trees and plants. There was a rock on the top of the hill and I always sat on it in the evening concentrating on the horizon until the sun would go down and darkness would envelop the surroundings. I continued this practice, for twelve years, on and off, without success. In 1968, when I was in Colombia on a research project in helping the municipal governments to modernize their administrative and financial sectors, I was asked by the Colombian government if I would go to the Putumayo Amazons and try to establish a municipal government for some 20,000 frontier people and incorporate in it some 200 Indian tribes. I found it a unique opportunity to visit a rare region of the world untouched by modern civilization and technology. I accepted and was send to the locality by a helicopter since there were no roads for other kinds of transportation. The name of the community I created was Puerto Aziz on the bank of Putumayo River which now has over a quarter of a million population.

I spent over five weeks in the wilderness of the Amazons submerged in its dark nights , solitude, away from all amenities of the modern world. I was entertained and at times frightened each night by the sounds and cries of the creatures in the jungle surrounding me. The immense differences between the two worlds of modern-industrialized and old-primitive-traditional had attracted my attention. In the peaceful and dark nights of the jungle, I was continually reminded of the extensive poverty, despair, fraud, and corruption I had witnessed in the so-called civilized world, along with unrelenting human thirst for material gains. With the passage of every night in the solitude of the immense jungle, I had become deeper and deeper involved in these thoughts and started to think why there was so much injustice in the world where there is enough for everyone to live comfortably. The sounds of jungle had turned into some kind of message and cries for help and direction. I was driven closer and closer to the primitive jungle life.[1] I paid more and more attention to my surroundings trying to extract some meaning from them. It seemed that the nature through all its creatures and way of life was trying to convey a message to me. On occasions it appeared as a form of command penetrating my soul and creating a distinct feeling that I was not alone, someone or something was with me and within me.

As the nights with solitude passed, my inner feelings became more and more vivid. Besides all the creatures of the jungle and its total being, I developed an increasing sense of a companion with me and within me. It was an extraordinary feeling. This companion not only directed me in my thoughts but focused my attention directly on the primitive and natural world around me. The jungle nights became less and less frightful and the sounds from its creatures appeared normal and less disturbing. Gradually within a few weeks, I began to look forward to disappearance of the sun and gradual dominance of darkness and the nightfall. I grew anxious for the companionship of my "inner thoughts" which not only became increasingly distinct from my own, but clearly responded to my thoughts and provided me either with answer or directed me where I would find one. "Could this be my Creator?" I asked myself evey time. The answer always was "Who else could it be?"

When I left the Amazons I had developed a distinct feeling, through my inner guidance , against so-called civilized world and how by materialistic drive it had disturbed and often destroyed the natural order and balanced forms of life. It had polluted the air and water, devastated the environment, wasted and depleted natural resources, and above all derailed and degraded human character and quality, and its natural harmony with its fellow humans, the environment and the rest of the nature.

Capitalism, which is based on materialism and drive for profits, seemed to be the prime cause of this devastation. In the environment of Amazons, life was organized in its eternal existence. It provided materials for the needed consumption by the nature's creatures and it renewed and restored deficiencies created by the use. In the civilized society, on the other hand, not only the used natural resources were lost forever but a tremendous amount of waste materials --- garbage, industrial, toxic, and atomic wastes - where left in their place. Furthermore, capitalism had allowed the wealth and resources to be accumulated in the hands of a few, leaving an immense sector of human race in poverty, despair and servitude. They were denied equal opportunity of access to the same resources to sustain a decent living standards.

When I returned to my academic life in 1969, my inner feelings were quite different. The civilized world did not look the way I had visualized before. The voices of Amazons nights were still in me and would haunt me nearly every night. Sometimes, I felt that I had brought with me the spirit of the jungle, its creatures, its orderly mission and its eternal balanced process of life. As a refuge, I became inclined to spend more and more time in the woods of my farm, ending at the top of the hill, sitting on the rock more like the old days but with quite different feelings. By no means did this replace the majesty and serenity of the Amazons, but during the sunset, I enjoyed siting on the top of the highest hill watching the nature gradually plunge into darkness. I listened to the sounds of the nature as I used to do in the Amazons jungle - the sounds that could not be heard by ordinary people.

Before the Amazon experience, I had been many times around this farm and walked in the woods and over the hills. I had never developed such feelings. Now suddenly everything had become different. The nature had acquired a new life and become a part of me, united with me. I felt among friends - trees, shrubs, animals and all others. I had a feeling that they all felt my presence and I was among friends.

Years passed and during this time, often at dusk, I would have certain strange feelings within me, like someone or something was directing me to go out in the farm, climb the hill and sit on the same rock and remain alone and concentrate on the horizon. Often, following my inner inspiration, I would remain in solitude for hours. All this time I would try to concentrate and penetrate what my eyes could see on the horizon.

This was the way I was introduced to meditation. It had become a pleasure and I continued for years with the aim of reaching the unknown. I had no idea what that unknown would be. But I knew there was something there, far beyond that colorful sunset horizon, to discover. At times in later years, I would feel as floating in the air, losing my hold on the ground. As the years passed, a feeling of anxiety and expectation developed within me which gradually reached a dominant level. The hours spent alone became increasingly exciting and a sense of inner fascination consumed me. As the days and weeks passed, I developed a feeling and much later a belief that something extraordinary was going to happen and I was going to be a part to it. Then one evening, to be exact on the fourth day of October, 1974, after some sixteen years of meditation with dedication and inner devotion, the moment arrived and my belief became reality and the door for the secrets of the Universe were opened before me.

First, I felt like I was becoming weightless, then I felt being lifted from the ground raised up in the air. It was a pleasant yet strange feeling. While in the air, I could see mysself still sitting on the hill. Suddenly, everything disappeared and I was plunged into the absolute darkness of space moving with infinite speed toward a destination I knew nothing about. In the extreme darkness of the space, I was not scared but astonished. From the absolute darkness, planets appeared, and in a matter of no time, became magnified to enormous size, bypassed me, diminished in size and disappeared in darkness. Soon the number of planets pasing by decreased and then no more appeared.

Now, I was alone, traveling through space in pure darkness. Not only I wasn't scared, but I had a feeling that somebody or something was with me, very close to me, making me feel secure. Soon, I arrived in an environment that was not dark but also didn't have any source of light. I came to a halt. I felt exalted with lightness and joy in me. I felt the Creator's presence, not only all around me but also within me. There was in the air a sense of enormous authority and an environment of full kindness and affection. Then in full clarity and authority it was suddenly revealed. "Welcome to the Center of the Universe and My close presence. Here is the eternity, the ultimate in life, its purpose and existence."[2]

I clearly understood that the Creator is a totally secular being and has no relation to any religion practiced today. Even in highly technological and scientifically advanced societies of today, very few people truly understand the true nature and essence of the Creator. It is the pure living energy, highly conscious, creative and intelligent, timeless and boundless. It is labeled erroneously by the scientific community as "Dark Energy" but Its true nature has not been "so-called scientifically" discovered yet.

When my mind was extended beyond my material body and the physical environment, it became boundless, expanding to infinity. I was also freed from the element of time which is connected to matter. I fell into an environment where there was no time only eternity. I could be everywhere or anywhere in a matter of no time and always with my Creator who had the same materless characteristics and essence. Right after revelation, suddenly I felt myself in my physical body, sitting on the top of the hill on my farmland. The sky looked the same as when I had left it behind. The sun had gone down, leaving a trace of light still glowing in the horizon. Its reflection on the far away clouds produced striking colors which were getting darker and darker as the night was falling upon my surroundings.

I was astonished. The cloud formations and the horizon appeared nearly the same as I had left behind. It seemed that no time had elapsed, yet, it was like I had been traveling and visiting places in the boundless space for years. I found myself full of new knowledge. I was not the same person sitting on this hill just a few seconds ago. First, I felt the Creator's presence in my mind in a way I had never felt before. Second, I had acquired an immense knowledge of the Universe, its unity and organized life from its highest being, the Creator, to its smallest particles, and how the creation, evolution and life of every part were in harmony, connected and depended on the rest. I had no other explanation but to conclude that when my mind expanded outward into the outer space, it assumed its boundless and materless, and thus, timeless nature. It was under these circumstances that I could rationalized traveling millions of light year distances and being downloaded with such an immense knowledge not discovered by our sientific community yet, and may not be discovered for many decades to come .

A year later, l sold the farm and moved into a new house and after a year of experimentation with different forms of meditation I selected my present form which I found logically and otherwise more appropriate and preferable to all other forms used at the time. If you decide to meditate or have been already practicing it, this is the form I would recommend to try. I lie preferably on a carpeted floor than a mattress, head toward North and feet pointing to the South with my arms resting on my sides. In this position, my body lies in the direction of the Earth's magnetic lines in a way that minimizes their effect in the body. This position also allows the body to use much less energy than any other position, making concentration easier. After taking your position close your eyes and clear your mind of all thoughts. Simply make it blank. This won't be easy in the beginning; all kinds of thoughts would invade your mind. You should close all the doors and not let any enter it. First try to keep your mind blank for a few seconds and then add more seconds. One of the best way to practice this is when you go to bed every night. lying down on your back and your arms on your sides, try to empty your mind of all your thoughts. This practice would have also some collateral benefits; it will reduce your anxiety, depression, fatigue and mental pressures; it will provide you with a sound sleep. Often time you will fall sleep while trying to make your mind blank. Soon you will learn how to maintain your mind blank for an extended time. I started to practice this type of meditation in 1979. It was effective for relaxation and reducing pain and stress but my purpose was to transcend into outer space as I had done it once before. With this aim I faced failure after failure but without giving up, because I knew it can be done. It took over five years until, in 1984, which I finally succeeded. This is just to show the extent of determination and discipline you need to have in order to succeed. Once you succeed the next one will be easier but still may take a substantial time and the same determination and discipline.

I would like to present one of my successes under this form of meditation details of which with the whole story can be found in my two books on this subject. My purpose was to meet a girl by the name of Ziba who was temporarily gifted to me by her parents who were also my host and hostess on planet Zoras which I had visited a year before. She had lived with me for about eleven months and was taken back by her parents to her planet because of mounting possibilities of her being discovered here by authorities and becoming subject to unaffordable hardships. She had promised to look for me every Tuesday in outer space and helping me to transcend.

On the night of meditation I had several problems utterly disturbing my mind making it extremely difficult to concentrate. I prepared myself for meditation, turned off the lights and lying down on the place I had prepared for this purpose in the middle of the living room. The time was 3:10 a.m. I tried to send my mind out into the boundless space in absolute darkness searching for Ziba. It was a night of big mental struggle. Despite my undisputed devotion and love for her, it seemed so difficult to move totally away from the painful events of the day. I would kick them out of my mind but they would turn around, reclaim and repossess my thoughts. I don't remember exactly when I was finally able to empty my mind of all thoughts and concentrate my efforts to transcend or how long I had remained on this stage of meditation that I found myself in a world of fantasy. Colorful figures were moving around me with delightful and soft sounds of music. They did not seem to be human figures but rather multicolor silhouettes at times appearing as humans and then changing shapes and always in motion. I felt joy and pleased by being surrounded with such creatures in a delightful environment. Gradually, the bright pleasing colors transformed into darker combinations. I became conscious of changes when colors slowly faded into darkness, and musical melodies into silence. Soon I was submerged in total darkness which I felt extending to infinity in a cool and chilly environment. I felt afraid. I could move around but every point of pause was the same as before, an environment of total darkness and absolute silence with a sense of infinity. I got the feeling that regardless how fast and in what direction I moved, I wasn't going anywhere. Despite this feeling, as a human being in desperation who would resort to any means to survive, I tried to move in one direction and then in another without any result. I had no hold on anything and felt suspended in the space. I screamed and screamed for help but no sound came out of my throat. Shivering from cold, I thought this was my end, to banish in darkness and silence into infinity without leaving a trace behind.

I remained at this stage of suspension and had reached a level of total helplessness when suddenly I saw a vague light in the horizon. I was overjoyed despite the fact that it did not promise any relief. The vague shadows became brighter and brighter and dark environment lightened gradually, ever expanding and approaching while turning into a combination of colorful moving and intermingling clouds. I felt warmth around me, the chill had disappeared. But all this transformation formed just a spot approaching me. The rest of the environment remained in total darkness.

Gradually, I was engulfed by the clouds. I felt conveniently warm. Slight aroma of a perfume was in the air, the kind that one smells when walking in a garden of flowers. I felt that some beings or things were touching or moving closer to me. But being relieved from that awful darkness and suspension was such a joy that I was not much concerned yet with such movements around me until I felt someone or some being softly and delicately held my hand. I turned around and could not see anything in the thick fog that had surrounded me, but I felt my hand still being held.

"It is me Reza," a delicate voice exclaimed, a voice very familiar, a voice I could never forget, the voice of my beloved Ziba. "Ziba!" I cried with utmost amazement "Is it you? Where are you? I can't see you." I continued looking while turning around and around. The hand in my hand sure felt like that of Ziba; the hand that I had held a thousand times before. I pulled her closer, I could feel her but I couldn't see her.

"Where are you? What is going on?" I questioned. "I can't see you. I know you are here. I feel you fully, but I can't see you." There was a long conversation between us which is not relevant to the subject presented here except that when I explained the events of my journey to her, she told me that I was traveling all the time and passed through these environments until I reached her. Then it came time to say goodbye.

"I have to go now, Reza. I will guide you to my planet and my house in our next meeting. It won't be so hard."

"But, how would I know that you are here waiting for me?"

"Every Tuesday, Darling, every Tuesday." She repeated while embracing me and kissing me goodbye. I didn't want let her go but she just evaporated right between my arms. I opened my arms and was engulfed in the same dense fog as before but in a little lighter environment.

While I was quite astonished of sudden disappearance of Ziba and pursuant changes, the fog around me had gradually cleared. To my great surprise, there was a huge door, more like a gate, right in front of me. The outer surroundings were still submerged in darkness. Fearful of falling into the state of darkness as I had experienced before, I was pleased to see an exit regardless what was to be found on the other side. I thought it could not be worse. The gate looked huge and heavy. I put my hands on both parts of the door to push it open but as soon as my hands touched the gate it opened readily half way. I was anxious to see the other side. It was also dark with one exception. I was facing the night sky with many stars blinking in far distances. I couldn't step in a boundless sky. The fog and the light had disappeared behind me and a full darkness had taken their place. I realized that either way my chance of survival was quite slim. At this moment the gate started to close. I desperation, I tried with all my power to hold the gate open. My efforts were useless and the gate kept closing. It was during this helpless struggle that I became conscious, finding myself lying down on my meditation mattress in my living room. I felt relieved. It took a few seconds to collect my thoughts and get rid of my fears.

It was 3:13 in the morning. Exhausted, I walked toward my bedroom for a good rest. I remembered once Ziba had told me that when you decide to travel into outer space, you never know where you are going to end up. There are so many terrifying and horrifying places in space and there is always a chance that you may end up in one of those. However, if you continue the experiment and you reach some desirable or fascinating place, then you have a destination to aim for in your next meditation and have a good chance to avoid straying into unknown wilderness, unless you desire to seek places beyond what you already have discovered. She had told me that this is what most people in her planet do every night and that is why they have discovered so many planets with life and civilization, some even more advanced than theirs.
